Tried every acne treatment on the market? Naturopath gives you some advice on how to zap the zits.

Acne is painful, embarrassing and no good for your social life, no matter what age you are. You can be a teenager or an adult and acne will still bear the scars physically and emotionally.

If you have tried lots of different acne cures and nothing has worked, then maybe you should consider some helpful and very easy advice on how to do it naturally.

  • Acne and the Bowel

Take a look at what goes in your mouth and what comes out. This may sound disgusting but to determine if your acne is being worsened from your gastrointestinal system then you need to know if you are processing the right foods.

If your bowel is not functioning properly, i.e constipation or diarrhea then you could be at risk of contaminating toxins in your bowel. If you have elevated toxins sitting in your bowel without regular emptying, then your body has no choice but to excrete then elsewhere. The other eliminative organ where toxins can be released is the skin.

So, toxin build up in the bowel will result in toxins being released from your skin which may cause acne.

To decrease the toxins being released through the skin, you need to get your bowels moving regularly. This is easily done by increasing the amount of fibre on your diet and matching it with sufficient water. Water is needed to move the fibre down the intestinal tract. If you don't have sufficient water, your body takes water from the bowel wall and you may become dehydrated.

Fibre foods include fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole foods.

Water needed is based on 30ml per kilo of body weight.

  • Acne and Herbal Medicine

You can chose to use herbal medicine to cleanse your blood of impurities. Your blood as well as your bowels need to be regularly cleansed and sometimes when our bodies are under duress, this does not always happen accordingly.

Herbally, there are a number of 'blood cleansers' available to treat acne.

There has been great success in treating acne when blood cleansers are used for 2-3 months.

When using a blood cleansing formula, the normal effect is that the acne worsens before it gets better. This may not sound like a good thing but it only lasts for around a week and then you will find that the skin improves.

Blood cleansers include herbs such as Chaste tree, Echinacea, Cleavers, Burdock and Yellow Dock.

  • Acne and Antioxidants

Add some antioxidants to your diet through food or supplements. Antioxidants such as Vitamin A, C, E and grape seed extract and mangosteen fruit scavenge free radicals that circulate our body every day.

These free radicals do damage to our cells and can worsen acne. Antioxidants will also help in the repair of tissue such as scarring.

Acne can be caused by many things, these are only a few suggestions. Hormones can also be the cause of acne as seen in teenage acne. Try eliminating these three factors first to naturally improve your acne.
