Pomegranate juice has been studied for its health benefits in recent years. Findings are mixed, yet many studies indicate positive results.

The pomegranate (Punica granatum) seed produces a natural juice that, although high in natural sugar, delivers antioxidants that have been shown to aid the body's natural defenses and boost immunity. Studies continue to show that this powerful immune booster is perhaps better for the body than previously thought.

Pomegranate Juice Protects the Heart

Pomegranate juice, according to studies, stimulates the production of nitric oxide (NO), and NO increase oxygen in the blood and helps it flow more effectively. It is further indicated that pomegranate juice antioxidant levels were higher than in blueberry, cranberry, and orange juice, as well as being greater than those in red wine.

In a separate study by Sumner, Llliott-Eller, and Weidner, et al., a group was followed for one year. The participants were supplemented with daily servings of 50 mL and five of them continued for an additional two years. The control group that did not consume developed a carotid intima media thickness (to test the thickness of artery walls) of 9%. The group that did consume had a thickness reduction of up to 30%.

These studies point to the potential of pomegranate juice being able to actually reverse arterial wall plaque, which may be the future of cardiovascular research. Those predisposed to heart disease who are not allergic to the pomegranate seed or juice, may have a natural heart booster at their fingertips.

Prostate Cancer and Pomegranate Juice

According to the Mayo Clinic’s Erik Castle, M.D., early studies of pomegranate juice are promising regarding its ability to slow the progression of prostate cancer. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) took a much longer time to double in men who drank the juice regularly. “A longer doubling time indicates that the cancer is progressing less rapidly,” wrote Dr. Castle.

Good News for Men with Erectile Dysfunction

Eight ounces of pomegranate juice daily may help the management of erectile dysfunction (ED) and impotence. A pilot study from the International Journal of Impotence Research showed, in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-bind crossover study, that 47% of the men experienced improvement. The researchers believe that the antioxidant effects may be the reason: They prevent free radicals from interrupting the flow of blood to the source.

The daily consumption of pomegranate juice may be a very good thing. It does have a high sugar content, but the benefits observed in random studies could outweigh the risks.

More studies need to be done, but the early results of pomegranate juice consumption are encouraging.
